Fine Limited-Edition English Mastiff Prints for Collecting and Display

Have you ever gone to a museum and wondered how those artists created those masterpieces? Well, each artist has his own technique to achieve the desired result. Everyone has a different style, taste, but most important: the process.

English Mastiff Painting: “Mastiff in Field” by Nick Van Duren

So you can see how I’ve created these paintings and a Mastiff print for you, take a look at the images below.

“Mastiff in Field” was painted roughly in about five phases…with seemingly endless phases in between.

Phase 1

A rough sketch on the canvas was done first. There are many ways to ensure accuracy, even from the start, however, this one I pretty much eye-balled. It’s kind of funny looking at the final painting and mastiff pint now.

As you can see, this one started off pretty raw!

Phase 2

More Burnt Umber and Burnt Sienna oil paint was added and then covered with a very thin layer of white. In order to make the mastiff in a painting really look deep, but also as if the dog is going to come right off the canvas, I paint in many layers. This is an old technique…there’s no secret to it. However, it does take quite a bit of work. And patience!

Phase 3

Again, more detail is added. The photograph for this phase is a little messed up. The head looks a little wierd…sorry! However, during the process of painting, it’s not unusual to hit a roadblock whereby you just aren’t satisfied with how it’s all going. Sometimes it goes smooth. Other times you really have to work through it. But it's good to see your progress though.

Phase 4

Some other colors are finally put into the painting during this phase. Again, more layers are added for depth. I was getting kind of excited at this stage as it was turning out to be more of what I wanted the final painting to look like.

Phase 5

This is almost done…but not quite. There are a few more details to be added. However, at this stage, you’re just about to say, “aaaahhhh”. ;)

After the painting is completed and dries, it’s off to the printer to have the image taken. Oils can take a while to dry, but I love the medium. It’s worth it.

The Limited-Edition Print for

The chosen print medium is called giclee. It’s done top-notch and only a limited number are created. That means collectible value, durability, and hopefully…sentimental value to those who purchase the mastiff art for display. What’s more, it makes me really proud to know that dog-lovers like myself, are able to enjoy these for years to come.

Here’s the final print displayed next to the original painting...

This one is number 2 of 500 for this limited-edition Giclee print. A nice lady from Texas won this in the Helping Hands Mastiff Medical Relief Fund Raffle during the Spring of 2003.
